HUD, the Veterans Administration (VA), and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) released a new national estimate of veterans homelessness. Based on the January 2014 annual Point-in-Time Count, there were 49,933 homeless veterans, a 33% decline (24,837 people) since 2010. This includes a 40% drop in the number of veterans sleeping on the street.
The agencies attribute the decline to the use of the Housing First approach and to the availability of HUD-VASH vouchers. Since 2008, HUD-VASH vouchers have served 74,019 veterans.
