CEDAM Captures Stories to Support United for Homes Proposal

The Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), an NLIHC State Coalition Partner, has released a five-minute video that captures stories from Michigan residents about their search for an affordable home. Titled “Housing We Can Afford?,” the video points to the need to produce and preserve homes for people with the lowest incomes across Michigan and makes the case for the National Housing Trust Fund as a real solution to the housing crisis. The video covers the stories of nine individuals and families who had been homeless, living in transitional housing, on the verge of losing their homes, or disabled and living in nursing homes. Although their circumstances vary, the residents share a common challenge: the struggle to find a place to rent that did not cost 80-100% of their monthly income. Advocates point out that the demand for housing priced at the lower end of the market is high, supply is limited, and the median wait for housing assistance is two years. CEDAM plans to use the video to increase awareness of affordable housing needs and advance the United for Homes campaign throughout Michigan.
