Households that move to county-managed affordable housing units can benefit from shorter work commutes and save money, according to a local geographic analysis. Conducted by the Housing Division of Arlington County, Virginia, the analysis compared residents’ commuting distance pre- and post-move.
New affordable housing units enable shorter commutes that reduce congestion and pollution, while saving residents time and money and benefiting the community as a whole. For example, it is estimated that a household that shaved nearly 16 miles from its daily work commute saved $2,064 dollars annually.
Arlington’s housing division manages 6,000 affordable units, where associated monthly rents range from $900 to $1,400.
