The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs considered the nomination of Gustavo Velasquez Aguilar for the position of HUD Assistant Secretary of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) on March 13. He served as the Director of the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights until October 2013.
Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) raised concerns about the Super Storm Sandy recovery in New Jersey (see elsewhere in Memo), particularly with respect to the lack of complete information made available in languages other than English. Senator Menendez asked Mr. Velasquez whether he would prioritize the investigation of the Sandy recovery in New Jersey; Mr. Velasquez said the Senator had his word that, if confirmed, he would prioritize the review of these matters.
Committee Chair Tim Johnson (D-SD) asked Mr. Velasquez asked how his experience working as a local partner of FHEO would impact his work at HUD if confirmed. Mr. Velasquez responded that overseeing the District of Columbia of Office Human Rights meant he was responsible for overseeing the investigation of all fair housing complaints.
