HUD recently launched an initiative to increase connections between fathers and their children in public housing, and to provide an opportunity for fathers to find local resources that support these connections.
HUD is encouraging public housing agencies (PHAs) across the country to host a “Father’s Day” event this year on June 18, the Saturday before Father’s Day. To date, 118 PHAs are planning events for June 18 and HUD hopes that at least 100 additional PHAs will decide participate in the coming months.
HUD hopes that these Father's Day events will bring fathers and children together to celebrate fatherhood and family, and at the same time connect the fathers to local programs and services. HUD is encouraging PHAs to reach out to local service providers to participate in these events. This will not only provide fathers with immediate access to agencies that can support their parenting, employment, legal and other service needs, but will also build connections between these agencies and the local PHA.
HUD is coordinating the local participation of other federal agencies, including the Departments of Education, Justice, Labor, Health and Human Services and Agriculture. These agencies will help ensure that federal services are available to fathers and that PHAs are aware of the resources these departments offer.
HUD will host a webinar on May 3 from 1 to 2pm ET for PHAs interested in participating in “Father's Day 2011.”
