More Local Elected Officials Endorse United for Homes Campaign

The Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, and the City Council of Rochester, New York are the latest local elected officials to join the United for Homes campaign. In announcing her support, Mayor Rawlings-Blake said, “The National Housing Trust Fund is a critical resource that needs funding in order to assist communities, like Baltimore, implement solutions to end homelessness. In Baltimore, on any given night, nearly 3,000 people experience homelessness. We know that lack of affordable housing for people with the lowest incomes is a root cause of homelessness. A home is the foundation that people need to bring stability to other parts of their lives. With the help of resources like the National Housing Trust Fund, our commitment to end homelessness is closer to becoming a reality.”The City Council of Rochester, New York issued a letter of support for the campaign on October 16. “Rochester, like many cities across the nation, has experienced an increase in unemployment, homelessness, and poverty. The prospect of additional funds from the NHTF that could assist our housing partners in creating, preserving or rehabilitating rental and homeowner units for extremely low and very low income households would be welcomed in our community,” the council members state in the letter. Tenants & Neighbors, an NLIHC State Coalition Partner, helped secure this endorsement.The United for Homes campaign now includes 1,275 national, state, and local organizations, and state and local government endorsers. The campaign seeks to fund the National Housing Trust Fund with revenue raised from modifications to the mortgage interest deduction.
