Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act Due for Reauthorization

If not reauthorized by Congress, the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) of 1996 will expire on September 30, 2013. NAHASDA is the law that authorizes Indian Housing programs, making them distinct from other subsidized housing programs governed by HUD, and allowing for tribes to have more autonomy in the manner in which housing programs on tribal lands are operated.Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) has introduced legislation to reauthorize the law (S. 1352). The Committee held a hearing on the bill and NAHASDA reauthorization issues on July 31 (see Memo, 8/2). At the hearing Chair Cantwell and other Senators indicated that they will work to reauthorize the law prior to the September 30 expiration. The last time the law was reauthorized was in 2008.
