Reporters Anne Danahy, Chris Rosenblum, Ed Mahon, Sara Ganim and Lauren Boyer have been selected to receive NLIHC’s Media Award for their work on the series Priced Out: High Rents Drive Housing Crisis for the Centre Daily Times of State College, PA. The award will be presented Monday, March 28 during a plenary session of the NLIHC conference.
In a four-day series, these reporters left their regular beats to cover the critical shortage of rental housing affordable to low income residents of Centre County. What they found was striking: in a small community dominated by a large university, students drive up the price of housing while the low wages available to many in the local workforce put available housing out of reach.
Following their subjects over the course of several months, these reporters wove community statistics and policy information together with personal stories to create a compelling picture of the housing disparities in Centre County. Readers learned that housing problems and homelessness are not just the lot of a few, but that in this community, high rents and low wages make it difficult for all kinds of people to find and maintain homes they can afford.
Articles in the series include:
· “Mother fights to stay afloat.”
· “Program helps pair afford Centre region homes.”
· “Mentors help mother get back on her feet.”
· “Commutes costly for workers.”
