NLIHC is seeking candidates for three positions.
This first is Vice President for Research. The Vice President for Research is a member of the senior leadership team and reports to the President/CEO. The Vice President for Research designs, directs, and assures regular updates to all NLIHC research projects. Projects include, but are not limited to, annual Out of Reach and housing gap analysis, preservation database, state and local rental housing funds database, alignment project, and polling. Among the responsibilities of the Vice President for Research are:
- To supervise the research team.
- To acquire and analyze numeric and non-numeric data to inform NLIHC policies and programs.
- To disseminate NLIHC research findings in an accessible and understandable format for use by varied audiences, including NLIHC members, public officials, state and local advocates, and members of the media.
- To represent NLIHC in collaboration with other housing and homelessness researchers and research institutions.
- To present NLIHC research at national, regional, and state convenings and events.
- To stay abreast of and report on research by others that informs NLIHC policies and programs.
- To facilitate work of NLIHC Research Advisory Committee.
- To maintain and expand NLIHC’s research repository.
Qualified candidates will have: a Ph.D. in a social science discipline and at least three years of relevant experience leading research projects; proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and relevant computer applications; a strong knowledge base in research and policy on housing poverty, homelessness, affordable housing, or social welfare and human needs; a demonstrated ability to lead a research team in a fast-paced environment; highly developed writing, editing, and oral and interpersonal communications skills; and a commitment to social justice.
The second is a Vice President for Field and Communications who will direct all of the Coalition’s field and communications efforts. Responsibilities include:
- Providing direct supervision of a Communications Specialist, a Graphic Design and Web Manager, and a Field Director, and ensuring effective supervision of two field organizers and one to three interns each semester.
- Directing the Coalition’s membership growth, retention, and engagement efforts, and developing and implementing strategies to maximize member participation in calls to action and other priority NLIHC initiatives.
- Coordinating NLIHC’s support to our State Coalition Partners and engagement of State Coalitions in the NLIHC advocacy agenda.
- Facilitating tenants’ and tenant associations’ participation in NLIHC activities, including the NLIHC’s Annual Forum, lobby days, voterization efforts, and other organizing efforts, and producing NLIHC’s resident newsletter, Tenant Talk.
- Developing and implementing the Coalition’s overall media and public relations strategy and media campaigns.
- Leading the development, production, and distribution of NLIHC’s Annual Report, and the annual Advocates’ Guide to Housing and Community Development Policy, and ensuring the quality and distribution of the NLIHC weekly Memo to Members newsletter and other reports and publications.
- Developing and implementing the overall NLIHC website and social media strategy, including blogs, tweets, and Facebook postings in support of NLIHC’s mission.
- Overseeing a system for documenting NLIHC field and communications activities and providing monthly reports to Chief Operating Officer.
- Serving as member of NLIHC Leadership Team.
- Staffing the Board of Director’s State Coalition Caucus, attending and reporting at Board and Executive Committee meetings and at other board committees as needed.
Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor’s degree plus ten years of supervisory management and leadership experience, or a Master’s degree plus five years of supervisory management and leadership experience. They must have a demonstrated ability to lead teams in a diverse, fast-paced environment. They must have experience and familiarity with housing poverty, homelessness, affordable housing policy, affordable housing development, or social service delivery, as well experience in coalition/association leadership, organizing, communications, public affairs, and/or marketing.
The third position is a Communications Specialist who will develop and implement media and public relations strategies. Responsibilities include:
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with media contacts.
- Pitching stories and securing regular interviews and editorial board meetings.
- Assisting in development of messaging and implementing messaging strategies.
- Preparing and releasing press releases and media alerts.
- Coordinating press events for NLIHC and our state coalition partners.
- Drafting op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, blogs, articles, and other opinion pieces, and getting them placed in relevant publications.
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy for using social media.
- Monitoring all media coverage of NLIHC, its campaigns, and its policy priorities.
- Maintaining records of all media work and producing analytic metrics and monthly reports.
- Assisting in content development, writing, and editing of Advocates' Guide, Annual Report, and other publications.
- Assisting state coalition partners in developing media strategies.
- Developing and implementing webinars, workshops, and written materials to aid NLIHC members in the use of social media and press strategies.
- Helping to recruit and supervise communication interns.
Qualified applicants for the Communications Specialist will have a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred). A degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related areas is a plus. Applicants must have two years of experience in media and social media communications, public affairs, and/or marketing. Applicants with knowledge of the fundamentals of housing poverty, homelessness, affordable housing policy, affordable housing development, or social service delivery are preferred. Applicants should also be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite and social media platforms.
All candidates for each position must have strong writing and editing, oral and interpersonal communications, and organizational skills, and a commitment to social justice.
