NLIHC has endorsed the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness’ (USICH) call for communities nationwide to officially affiliate with its efforts to implement “Opening Doors,” the federal government’s strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness.
“Becoming an Opening Doors community will help your community to be recognized as a champion for your leadership in ending homelessness and will be something you can highlight as you seek to advance your goals by applying for local, state, and federal programs,” USICH announced in its call to action to gain endorsers. “It is also an opportunity to be included in a feedback exchange with USICH and other signatory communities.”
The strategic plan’s goals are to end chronic homelessness by 2015; prevent and end veteran homelessness by 2015 and family, youth, and child homelessness by 2020; and reduce all other types of homelessness. USICH urged communities to adopt these goals, set incremental targets to reach them, and use data to measure their performance.
