On July 31, President Barack Obama joined HUD staff at HUD headquarters in Washington, DC in welcoming Julián Castro as the new Secretary. President Obama spoke of the accomplishments of Shaun Donovan, the outgoing HUD Secretary, who is now the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. The President cited Secretary Castro’s accomplishments as Mayor of San Antonio, including revitalization of long-neglected neighborhoods, initiation of the East Side Promise Zone, and expansion of early childhood education. President Obama quoted Secretary Castro, who had characterized HUD as the “Department of Opportunity.” Finally, the President praised the work of HUD staff and encouraged them to continue their efforts to address the nation’s housing needs.
Secretary Castro was formally sworn in by Chief Judge Richard W. Roberts on July 28.
“We look forward to building a strong partnership with Secretary Castro,” said NLIHC President and CEO Sheila Crowley. “We are confident that he will use his tenure as HUD Secretary to protect and expand housing for the lowest income people in our country, including people who are homeless.”
