On June 19, the Senate confirmed President Barack Obama’s nomination of Gustavo Velasquez Aguilar to be the next Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) at HUD. Mr. Velasquez’s nomination was approved by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Related Agencies on April 29 (see Memo, 5/2). Mr. Velazquez served as the Director of the District of Columbia’s Office of Human Rights from January 2007 to October 2013, where he was responsible for the investigation and disposition of discrimination cases regarding employment, education, public accommodations, and housing.
“Mr. Velasquez has an impressive track record in civil rights and has worked to ensure that all families have the right to seek and obtain housing free from discrimination. We welcome his confirmation and are confident that he will successfully lead HUD’s work to ensure equality in the housing market,” said National Fair Housing Alliance President and CEO Shanna L. Smith in a statement after Mr. Velasquez’s Senate confirmation.
