On December 2, the Senate confirmed, by a vote of 68 to 28, President Barack Obama’s nomination of Nani Coloretti as HUD Deputy Secretary. Ms. Coloretti’s nomination was approved by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs on April 29 (see Memo, 5/2).
Ms. Coloretti’s nomination was delayed in getting to the full Senate by Senator Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) efforts to block her nomination. Senator Grassley put a hold on it because he thought that the U.S. Department of the Treasury used illegal hiring practices when Ms. Coloretti was Assistant Secretary for Management.
Ms. Coloretti will oversee HUD’s daily operations. “Nani is a proven executive who has excelled at making government more efficient at the municipal and federal levels,” said HUD Secretary Julián Castro. “Her breadth of experience and track record at the Treasury Department make her the ideal choice for a mission-oriented agency like HUD.”
Ms. Coloretti is now the highest ranking Filipino-American in the Obama Administration.
