With its action on the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies FY12 Appropriations (see article above), The House Committee on Appropriations has passed the third of 12 appropriations bills.
The Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies (T-HUD) of the House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to mark-up its bill on July 14 (see Memo, 5/13), with the full Committee mark-up scheduled for July 26.
The Senate has not yet scheduled its FY12 T-HUD appropriations mark ups. The Senate Committee on Appropriation has begun its FY12 work and is accepting FY12 programmatic funding requests from members. Neither the House nor Senate is accepting earmark funding requests; instead, requests must be limited to funding levels for programs that members believe to be valuable for their constituents.
During the week of May 27, several Senate “dear colleague” letters circulated in support of HUD programs including the Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program, the Housing Counseling program, and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program (see Memo, 5/27).
The letter circulated by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Daniel Akaka (D-HI), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and John Rockefeller (D-WV) supporting restoring $87.5 million in funding for the Housing Counseling program received bi-partisan support of 24 Senators.
Senator Patrick Leahy’s (D-VT) dear colleague letter in support of the “highest possible level” of funding for CDBG received 26 signatures.
The deadline for Senator Richard Durbin’s (D-IL) letter in support of funding HOPWA at $362 million has been extended until June 8.
Senator Herbert Kohl (D-WI) began circulating a dear colleague letter in support of the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and the Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities. The letter requests $757 million for the Section 202 program and $196 million for the Section 811 program. The deadline for sign on is June 7.
