Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced S. 1148, the Veterans Programs Improvement Act of 2011, on June 6. Among other provisions, the measure would require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to submit to Congress within one year a comprehensive plan to end homelessness among veterans. The bill would strengthen the VA’s Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem program and would reauthorize appropriations for several federal programs that serve veterans experiencing homelessness.
On June 8, the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs considered S. 1148 in a hearing, “Legislation Pending Before the Veterans' Affairs Committee.” Witnesses from the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and Disabled American Veterans supported the bill. No further action has been taken on S. 1148 as of this writing, and the bill has no cosponsors.
