Webinar on Protecting Unassisted Tenants at Properties with Maturing Mortgages or Expiring Use Restrictions
On April 28 at 2 pm ET, The National Housing Law Project (NHLP) will conduct a free webinar on assessing the need for tenant protection vouchers for tenants who have no HUD assistance at HUD-assisted properties with impending mortgage maturities.
Between FY14 and FY16, approximately 28,000 unassisted units in certain HUD properties in 46 states will experience mortgage maturity or the expiration of use restrictions or assistance. Unassisted tenants in these properties face the serious risk of a burdensome rent increase, displacement, or homelessness. The webinar will discuss how to identify these units and assist the tenants in need of tenant protection vouchers. For FY15, Congress has again targeted $5 million for tenant protection vouchers to help address this issue.
The one-hour webinar is designed for tenant advocates new to the mortgage maturity issue, as well as those with familiar with the problem.
The lead presenter will be Stephen Knight, NHLP Supervising Attorney. In addition, advocates will contribute insights on key issues and strategies based on their experience. Scheduled participants include:
- Adam Cowing, Public Counsel, Los Angeles
- Lili Vo Graham, Public Law Center, Los Angeles
- Jeffrey Hearne, Legal Services of Greater Miami
- Nicole Gon Ochi, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Los Angeles
Participants will have an opportunity to pose questions.
