2015 State and Local Organizing Honoree
NLIHC’s 2015 State and Local Organizing Award is presented to the Campaign to Take Back Vacant Land (TBVL) in Philadelphia for their victory of establishing the nation’s largest municipal land bank.
Led by the Women’s Community Revitalization Project, Liberty Resources, and Disabled in Action, TBVL, a coalition of 47 community organizations, worked for the past four years to train grassroots advocates, conduct media events, organize citizen lobby days, and develop a clear legislative solution with city planners and staff that will prevent neighborhood disinvestment, displacement, and blight.
Their efforts led to the creation of the Philadelphia Land Bank, which will take control of more than 40,000 abandoned properties throughout the city. The new entity will transfer properties to organizations and developers for new affordable housing, urban agriculture projects, and neighborhood economic development projects, and will also generate municipal revenue through the sale of market-rate property.
