The Edward W. Brooke Housing Leadership Award is named for the former senator, who championed low income housing in the Congress and later as Chairman of NLIHC’s Board of Directors. The award is presented at NLIHC's Annual Housing Leadership Awards Reception.
Edward W. Brooke Housing Leadership Award: J. Ronald Terwilliger
Ron Terwilliger is chairman emeritus of Trammell Crow Residential Company, a national residential real estate company. Trammell Crow was the largest developer of multifamily housing in the U.S. for several decades during Ron’s tenure as CEO. Ron is also currently non-executive chairman of Terwilliger Pappas Multifamily Partners, which develops rental apartments in the Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh/Durham markets.
Ron’s commitment to affordable housing is unwavering. In 2014, Ron established the J. Ronald Terwilliger Foundation for Housing America’s Families to rebalance federal housing policy to more effectively address our nation’s critical affordable housing challenges and to meet the housing needs of future generations. Among his many philanthropic contributions to affordable housing efforts are a $5 million gift to establish the ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing; a $5 million gift to the Enterprise Foundation to create the Enterprise Terwilliger Fund, an initiative intended to create 2,000 affordable homes annually; and a $100 million legacy gift to Habitat for Humanity International to help 60,000 families access improved housing conditions. He has also contributed more than $20 million to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Ron is an honor graduate of the United States Naval Academy. After serving five years in the Navy, he received his MBA degree with High Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Business where he was elected a Baker Scholar.
