The Sentencing Project said 1 in 3 U.S. citizens has some kind of record, other studies estimate it as around 8% of all of us and there are other estimates in between those extremes. But whichever's correct, anyone poor or working class is vulnerable to not being able to pay for an adequate defense in criminal court. Then the often unfair unconviction becomes an unfair denial of housing. Austin's Reentry Roundtable was working on this thru 2018 but not sure about developments since then. Any info greatly apprectiated! 00:34:47 Courtney Cooperman (she/her), NLIHC: Hi Jennifer! There have been some state-level campaigns to limit lookback periods, including a campaign that won a significant new law in New Jersey in 2021 to limit lookback periods. Our policy manager, Kim Johnson, leads our work on reentry housing and would be happy to connect with you on this issue. Monica DeLancy monicadelancy@hotmail.com www.wethriverenters.com 00:44:56 Jennifer Mohawk: Re: criminal convictions, one major problem is the landlords, employers, et al that don't differentiate. Two guys close in age & physical strength who get into a fight is different that some guy beating up a woman, an able bodied person abusing someone who's got a serious disability, an adult abusing a child. Likewise someone who commits minor non-violent crimes (shoplifting, prostitution, etc.) to provide for their underage children when public benefits don't stretch enough is not the same as someone who cheats 98 year old Granny out of her last dollar or violently robs someone. If we could review all the variations that are part of criminal convictions it would help many people 00:45:43 samatha anderson: I like that strategy 00:47:11 Courtney Cooperman (she/her), NLIHC: Replying to "Re: criminal convict..."
