Housing Spotlight | Volume 4, Issue 1

Housing Spotlight: The Affordable Rental Housing Gap Persists provides an in-depth analysis of the growing gap between the number of low income renters and the number of units that are affordable and available to them. The Spotlight stresses how difficult it is for renters with the lowest incomes to find housing they can afford, across every state and major metropolitan area in the country. For the first time, the Spotlight provides data on the shortage of affordable rental homes to households with income at or below 15% of area median income. This Housing Spotlight also demonstrates that it is becoming more difficult for lower income households to find affordable housing as renting becomes an increasingly popular choice among middle and higher income households. NLIHC proposes that funding the National Housing Trust Fund is the most effective way to address the growing need for affordable rental housing.
