Seattle City Council and Mayor Support United for Homes

The Seattle City Council has endorsed United for Homes proposal; Mayor Michael McGinn (D) signed the resolution on July 22. The resolution highlights the need for affordable housing in the city, noting that 61% of its extremely low income renter households are severely cost burdened, paying more than half of their income on rent and utilities. The City of Seattle urged Congress to direct savings from mortgage interest deduction modifications to the National Housing Trust Fund to build, preserve, rehabilitate, and operate rental housing that is affordable for people with the lowest incomes. The Washington Low Income Housing Alliance, an NLIHC State Coalition Partner, was instrumental in the resolution’s passage, and plans to work with other municipalities across the state to gain more support for the proposal and campaign. The support of state and local governments is crucial to advancing the United for Homes campaign.
