Staff of the National Low Income Housing Coalition Form Union

Washington, DC – The staff of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) requested and was granted voluntary recognition of their union, NLIHC Workers United, represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild (WBNG). NLIHC and WBNG signed an agreement today recognizing the Union as the exclusive representative of the staff at NLIHC and committing to work together in good faith on issues impacting working conditions of employees. NLIHC is a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to achieving racially and socially equitable public policy that ensures people with the lowest incomes have quality homes that are accessible and affordable in communities of their choice.

“The staff of NLIHC are thrilled to successfully gain voluntary recognition of our union. This is a true testament to the power all workers have when they come together around their shared values” said NLIHC Workers United. “Voluntary recognition is an incredible first step in aligning our workplace with the mission driven, values based organization we all care so deeply for. Now, we look forward to entering the bargaining phase to advance the three priorities that brought us together - transparency, staff development and support, and collaboration."

“At NLIHC, we believe deeply in the power of people to organize, to make their voices heard, and to help shape the decisions that affect their lives. It is at the heart of our mission and the work we do every day alongside advocates and organizers across the country,” said Renee M. Willis, NLIHC President and CEO. “That same belief extends to our own team. Our staff is extraordinarily talented and deeply committed to our mission, and their work makes NLIHC stronger. We were proud to voluntarily recognize the union, and we look forward to moving ahead together in a spirit of respect, partnership, and shared commitment to the people and communities we serve.”

In moving to create a union, NLIHC staff organized with WBNG, a local of The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America, that represents more than 3,000 news, information, nonprofit, and labor organization workers in the mid-Atlantic and beyond. The union will be represented by WBNG in collective bargaining.
