The National Low Income Housing Coalition is dedicated to achieving racially and socially equitable public policy that ensures people with the lowest incomes have quality homes that are accessible and affordable in communities of their choice.
NLIHC supports all policy initiatives that advance our mission and goals. We focus our resources proactively on our core policy objectives, while monitoring the policy environment and responding to emerging issues as needed.
We invite you to download our Policy Priorities and explore the various policy issues we work on in this section.
The Virtual Advocacy Toolkit is a comprehensive guide that includes NLIHC's policy priorities for 2022, data resources, talking points, and tips for a successful meeting with your elected officials. The NLIHC policy team outlines policy priorities and goals for the upcoming year, and how you can take action by incorporating those goals into your advocacy.

National Housing Trust Fund
The National Housing Trust Fund (HTF) is the first new housing resource since 1974 targeted to the building, rehabilitating, preserving, and operating rental housing for extremely low-income people.
Federal Budget & Spending
The ability to serve low income people in need depends on federal appropriations. NLIHC monitors the federal budget process and advocates for the highest possible allocation of resources at HUD and the USDA Rural Housing Service to support affordable housing and community development.
Preventing Benefit Cuts
One of the biggest barriers to economic prosperity for America’s lowest-income families is the lack of decent, accessible, and affordable homes. Research shows that when people have a stable, decent, and accessible home that they can afford, they are better able to find employment, achieve economic mobility, age in place, perform better in school, and maintain improved health.
Fair Housing
NLIHC tracks regulations around affirmatively furthering fair housing and develops resources for advocates to weigh in on the process.
Disaster Housing Recovery
Learn more about efforts to restore affordable housing after natural and man-made disasters, including the latest on Hurricane Florence and the 2017 disasters.
Housing & Criminal Justice
Federal and state lawmakers are now reexamining sentencing policies that have proven to be overly punitive and harmful to families and communities, and they are working towards comprehensive criminal justice reform.
Native American Housing
The National Low Income Housing Coalition strongly urges Congress to increase funding to build and preserve affordable homes in Native communities with the greatest needs.
Rural Housing
NLIHC works with our state and national partners to advocate for increased funding for USDA and HUD programs, particularly those that provide funding to non-profits that support the creation of affordable housing.
