Join 8/12 DHR Webinar on Immigration & Disaster Recovery

Aug 01, 2025

Join NLIHC, Protecting Immigrant Families, and Just Solutions Collective on Tuesday, August 12 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET for the “Immigration & Disaster Recovery: Rights, Access, and Where We Go from Here” webinar.

Recent changes in the federal government around immigration – notably the use of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel to arrest and detain immigrants regardless of status in cities across the country – have sparked justifiable fear in immigrant communities. At the same time, the summer disaster season is in full swing - creating increasing concerns over potential immigration enforcement actions during disasters. This has raised questions among members of immigrant communities about what financial assistance may be available to them, and what emergency assistance is safe to pursue during and after disasters.

During this webinar experts from NLIHC, the Protecting Immigrant Families Coalition, and Just Solutions Collective will provide advocates for immigrant communities and disaster recovery practitioners information to tackle this issue. Presenters will share what we know now, where things are changing, and what we can all do to keep our communities safe while working to fix our broken disaster recovery system.

The webinar will kick off with a federal state of play to review and evaluate the rapidly changing landscape. Then, panelists will shift to examining legal strategies to meet the moment, protect our communities, and advance a just recovery for all survivors impacted by disaster. Local community-based organizations will level set with a look at what’s happening on the ground right now, what strategies to safeguard survivors have been successful, and where advocates can plug in. Experts in emergency sheltering will share more about best practices with a specific focus on disaster related issues.
