By NLIHC Policy Team
On Wednesday, October 21, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) will lead the Housing Now Day of Action, with a rally at U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia and coordinated actions in 31 communities across the country.
Advocates, people with lived experience of homelessness, service providers, and community members will call on HUD to protect subsidized housing and reject policies that put people’s housing stability at risk. The actions will also challenge the growing use of punitive and coercive responses to homelessness.
NCH says people with lived experience must have a meaningful role in shaping the policies that affect their lives. The coalition is urging federal leaders to protect permanent housing, address the nation’s housing affordability crisis, and invest in solutions that prevent homelessness and help people find and keep a home.
The October 21 actions are intended to be peaceful and lawful. Local events will be organized by community members and advocates in participating locations.
