NLIHC Recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day 2026

Oct 09, 2026

This Monday, October 12, NLIHC proudly recognizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a time to reclaim history, resist colonialism, and honor the resilience of Indigenous peoples around the globe. NLIHC’s office sits on the unceded homelands of the Nacotchtank, Anacostan, and Piscataway peoples. We recognize that the genocide of Native people is part of a long legacy of displacement and injustice that continues to impact housing stability for people in all corners of what is now called the United States of America. We humbly work in partnership with Native-led organizations to expand our relationships, further our understanding, and uplift Native housing needs through our research, policy, and advocacy.

At NLIHC, we keep this Land Acknowledgment alive through ongoing reflection, learning, relationship-building, and advocacy. On this Indigenous Peoples' Day, NLIHC encourages advocates to take action by:

  1. Learning more about the people indigenous to your area.

  2. Contacting your members of Congress to advocate for NLIHC’s Native housing policy priorities.

  3. Submitting a public comment by November 2 responding to the U.S. Census Bureau’s proposed rule that would negatively impact Native communities (see Memo, 10/5). The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has a helpful webpage on the impacts of the proposed rule, and Get Out the Native Vote and the Alaska Federation of Natives released “Talking Points on the Need for a Question on American Indians and Alaska Natives in the 2030 Census Survey.”
