NLIHC Manager of Training and Innovation Billy Cerullo joined a cohort of nine tenant leaders to discuss community organizing and grassroots base building in Alabama. The tenant leader cohort is convened by NLIHC State Partner Collaborative Solutions to further advocacy and organizing around increased tenant protections in the state.
The training began by defining community organizing and distinguishing it from advocacy and activism as a unique practice for building grassroots power to effect positive change in people’s lives. Following, Billy led a discussion on how the tenant leaders are uniquely positioned to organize their communities as leaders in their churches and as social workers, connecting their preexisting relationships in their communities to base building for change.
At the end of the call, the tenant leaders decided to continue their cohort as a central organizing committee to begin organizing their communities around tenant protections with a follow-up NLIHC training scheduled for February.
