Our Homes, Our Votes Best Practice Report, “Turning Renters into Voters,” Coming Soon!
Oct 03, 2025
Our Homes, Our Votes is NLIHC’s nonpartisan campaign that seeks to close the voter turnout gap between low-income renters and high-income homeowners, and to elevate housing as an election issue. This campaign helps to equip housing advocates, tenant leaders, and service providers with tools to register, educate, and mobilize low-income renters to vote.
This new report highlights successful activities and best practices in nonpartisan voter engagement, drawing on lessons from the Pilot Communities initiative launched during the 2024 election cycle. Through this initiative, six State and Tribal Partners with a strong record of nonpartisan voter engagement—the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, Housing Network of Rhode Island, Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing, Georgia Advancing Communities Together, Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania, and Prosperity Indiana—received grant funding, technical assistance, and resources to support voter registration, education, and mobilization.
The report summarizes the work of each partner and identifies actionable insights that housing and homelessness organizations can employ to boost voter turnout in their own communities. It is designed as a guide for advocates, tenant leaders, subsidized housing providers, and direct service organizations pursuing nonpartisan voter engagement work.
