The Connection

Recap of 7/31 Training Institute Webinar: Communications & Branding 101

Aug 01, 2025

Yesterday, Thursday July 31, NLIHC hosted its final session of the three-part training webinar for its Training Institute for Tenants and Residents. This session, Communication & Branding 101, focused on how to build a strong brand and amplify voices of tenant-led movements through communication strategies.

NLIHC’s Director of Communications, Lisa Marlow, and Senior Graphic Communications Coordinator, Carlton Taylor Jr., showed participants how strategic communications can amplify advocacy efforts, elevate storytelling, and help housing organizations reach new audiences with clarity, consistency, and impact. Marlow and Taylor emphasized that crafting effective communication plans involves identifying target audiences, simplifying messages, choosing the proper channels, and timing, while also ensuring brand clarity through clear images, logos, consistent fonts, and typography, all of which are important when reaching targeted individuals.

One of the key takeaways from this session emphasized that communication is not a side strategy, but the core to how tenants, residents, housing advocates, and more can build public will for housing justice. By focusing on clarity, consistency, and connection, housing advocates can create messaging that informs, inspires, and drives long-term action.

Whether you’re just getting started or deepening your practice, this training, along with those to follow, aims to provide practical tools and powerful insights to support transformative change.
