This month’s “Tenant Talk Live” featured organizers from the NYC Freeze the Rent campaign, who delivered a presentation titled "Tenant Power Rising." Speakers shared how tenant leaders and advocates mobilized thousands of New Yorkers during the city’s recent mayoral primary to demand stronger tenant protections and a rent freeze.
Citing unaffordable rent prices and the outsized influence of corporate landlords, the organizers explained how they built a grassroots movement that pressured nearly all mayoral candidates to support a rent freeze. In this endeavor, they highlighted the critical role the mayor plays in shaping housing policy through the Rent Guidelines Board.
Through rallies, canvassing, and phone banking, the campaign demonstrated how tenant-led organizing can successfully mobilize communities and influence elections–offering a model that others can use to build lasting political power in their own cities.
