Senator Booker (D-NJ) References Affordable Housing Shortage, NLIHC Data in 25-Hour Long Speech
Apr 07, 2025
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) spoke on the affordable housing crisis in his record-breaking 25-hour long speech, referencing data from NLIHC’s annual report, The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Rental Homes. Senator Booker said “almost half of all renters are struggling to pay their rent, devoting more than one third of their income to housing costs.” The Senator also elaborated on the power imbalance between renters and landlords: "Since the pandemic, rents have jumped more than 12% year over year, and hidden rental fees and other expenses on already cost-burdened tenants continue to mount as landlords assume more and more power and leverage, leaving tenants and prospective homebuyers with nowhere to turn."
