New NLIHC Fact Sheet on the Housing Experiences of Hispanic or Latino Renters

Oct 09, 2026

NLIHC released a new fact sheet on Hispanic or Latino renters, who account for 21% of all renters and 22% of all extremely low-income renter households. The fact sheet, which is available in both English and Spanish, explores findings from NLIHC’s 2025 National Renter Survey data, 2026 The Gap report, and 2026 Out of Reach report. Our research finds that much like renters overall; affordability is a major concern for renters who identify as Hispanic or Latino. The majority (55%) of Hispanic or Latino renter households are housing cost-burdened – spending more than 30% of their income on housing costs – and nearly 15% of Hispanic or Latino renters say their households “always” or “often” struggled to pay rent over the last two years. Among this group, 38% of those who considered moving or tried to move, and 13% of those who actually moved in the last two years said they were motivated by being unable to afford their current rent. Hispanic or Latino renters also report experiencing other challenges with securing different rental housing when they need or want to move, as well as safety and habitability issues in their rental homes. The fact sheet highlights the ways in which federal policymakers can help address the housing concerns of Hispanic or Latino renters – for example, by protecting and expanding funding for affordable housing and homelessness programs and pushing back against harmful policies that disproportionately impact Hispanic or Latino renters.
