Now Available: Resources from 5/5 Tenant Talk Live Meeting
May 08, 2025
This month’s Tenant Talk Live featured Dr. Michael Akinwumi, Chief AI Officer and Reni Allen Fellow at the National Fair Housing Alliance. In his presentation, titled The Impact of AI on Tenant Rights and Housing Access, Dr. Akinwumi unpacked the growing influence of AI in the housing system and its implications for renters and homeowners. He challenged the myth that AI tools are inherently efficient, highlighting how these systems often reproduce systemic inequities, disproportionately impacting Black and Latino communities through flawed data. Dr. Akinwumi explained how algorithm-driven tools used in rent-setting and mortgage lending can contribute to inflated housing prices and deepen housing unaffordability. He emphasized how tenants can advocate for fairer systems by demanding transparency and questioning how decisions are made by landlords, as well as engaging with trusted organizations like NLIHC and NFHA to advocate for further protections.
