On July 17, the U.S. Census Bureau and HUD released factsheets summarizing the 2011 American Housing Survey (AHS) data for 29 metropolitan areas as well as for the nation as a whole. AHS national data are collected from a representative sample of households every two years, but metropolitan area data are collected on a rotating basis. Each factsheet gives a tally of the housing inventory of the area, including owner-occupied, renter-occupied, vacant, and seasonal units. The factsheets also contain a wide array of housing statistics for each metropolitan area, such as the proportion of AHS survey participants in an area who rent versus those who pay a mortgage. Charts and infographics depict the physical and financial characteristics of both owner- and renter-occupied housing in each metropolitan area.
