NLIHC Stands with the Southern Poverty Law Center and Rejects the Administration’s Efforts to Criminalize Civil Rights

Apr 22, 2026

Washington, D.C. - The current administration’s indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is concerning for all who value democracy, justice, and the rule of law. The National Low Income Housing Coalition stands with partners across movements committed to justice, dignity, and opportunity. We support SPLC’s efforts to ensure that low-income voters, communities of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and other marginalized groups have the resources to protect their civil rights and liberties.

Let’s be clear about what this moment represents. The administration is attacking organizations that stand in the way of its dangerous rewrite of history and civil rights. They are actively working to reverse the definition of civil rights and eliminate organizations like the SPLC that are steeped in decades-long advocacy of exposing hate and holding systems accountable. Targeting organizations like the SPLC raises serious questions about whether power is being used to protect the public or to punish those who challenge it.

However, this issue extends beyond a single organization. It is about whether civil rights advocates, researchers, and truth-tellers can work without fear of political retaliation, and whether dissent is protected or suppressed.

At a time when millions of people with the lowest incomes are struggling to afford a safe, stable home, we should be reinforcing the institutions that advance equity and accountability, not undermining them.

We will not look away or soften our voice in moments like this. We stand in solidarity with partners across movements who are fighting for justice, dignity, and the right to be heard.

We call for full transparency, strict adherence to due process, and an unwavering commitment to the democratic principles that protect civil society.

When truth is treated as a threat, it is not just one organization at risk—it is the integrity of our democracy. And we will not be silent.
