Generally the credit provides relief when property taxes (or 23% of rent) exceeds 3.2% of the measure of income for the household. Different calculations are used if the household has a person with a disability, is headed by a senior, or certain veterans. Certain low-income households qualify for additional relief. The maximum credit amount was $1,600 for tax year 2022. The program was established in the 1970s.
