Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit
Through the Senior Circuit Breaker Tax Credit, Massachusetts offers senior citizens a refundable credit on their personal state income tax returns. The tax credit is based on the actual real estate taxes paid on the Massachusetts residential property they own or rent and occupy as a principal residence. For tax year 2022, the maximum credit amount is $1,200, and the maximum eligible income is $96,000. For renters, 25% of their annual Massachusetts rent must exceed 10% of their total Massachusetts income for the tax year. If the credit an individual is owed exceeds the amount of total tax payable for the year, they are refunded the additional amount of the credit without interest. Seniors 65 years of age or older are eligible. Funding Description: This is a tax relief program.
