A group of 51 U.S. representatives, led by Representatives Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL) and Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), sent a letter on April 10 to House and Senate leaders urging them to include $100 billion for emergency rental assistance in the next COVID-19 emergency stimulus package. The letter notes that 10 million people filed for unemployment in the final weeks of March and will need additional resources to remain stably housed. NLIHC estimates that $100 billion in rental assistance is needed to avoid creating a financial cliff for renters after eviction moratoriums are lifted and to ensure low and very low-income renters who are not protected by such moratoriums can remain stably housed.
