NLIHC, the National Housing Law Project (NHLP), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and Demos sent a letter to HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge on September 21 requesting a meeting to provide recommendations for the department’s forthcoming plan to increase access to voting. President Biden issued on March 7 an Executive Order on Promoting Access to Voting directing all agencies to submit by September 23 plans for how they will promote voter registration and engagement.
The letter asks HUD to incorporate voter registration into competitive funding programs, and to encourage state and local governments, as well as third party organizations administering competitive funding programs, to increase voter registration outreach to residents. The letter also urges the agency to ask Congress to enact federal legislation to close the voter registration gap impacting renters with low incomes.
