Defending and Expanding Funding for Affordable Housing and Homelessness Programs

Jun 30, 2025

The Trump administration released on May 30, the remaining details of their full fiscal year (FY) 2026 budget request. As indicated in the partial request released on May 2, the full budget request proposes a historic 44% cut to HUD’s vital affordable housing, homelessness, and community development programs, and would impose changes to rental and homelessness assistance that would leave more families at greater risk of housing insecurity and homelessness.

THE IMPACT

In response to the release of the budget request, NLIHC shared an analysis on the effects of the proposed cuts to vital federal programs and began mobilizing our partners to support the highest level of funding possible for affordable housing, homelessness, and community development resources in FY26. NLIHC shared an updated FY26 Budget Chart and a new advocacy toolkit. The advocacy toolkit, Opposing Cuts to Federal Investments in Affordable Housing, offers information, resources, and strategies for advocates to take action to protect federal investments in housing and homelessness solutions.

NLIHC encourages advocates to utilize its advocacy hub for tools to call on Congress to protect and expand affordable housing and homelessness resources.

NLIHC President and CEO Renee Willis also shared a press statement on the importance of addressing the nation’s housing poverty and homelessness crisis. Willis was joined by members from the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH) and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) for a joint media call on the devastating consequences of cutting critical housing and homelessness resources. The call was also joined by 35 media outlets, including The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal, CBS, and Politico. While underscoring its policy advocacy and mobilization work with data and research, NLIHC is also committed to educating members of the media on the significance of the nation’s housing crisis and solutions needed.
