Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) on March 2 was named chair of the Housing, Transportation, and Community Development Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Development.
Senator Smith has a record of advocating for meaningful policies to ensure the lowest-income renters are able to obtain safe, stable, affordable, and accessible housing. She has worked across the aisle to increase the availability of rental assistance in rural and tribal areas, pushed for common sense measures to ensure the safety of low-income residents in federally assisted housing, and led efforts in the Senate to increase access to coronavirus stimulus payments for people experiencing homelessness.
NLIHC looks forward to working with Chairwoman Smith and her subcommittee to continue pushing for robust federal investments in affordable housing programs, meaningful protections for renters, and additional resources to help the nation recover from the pandemic.
