Take Action! Affordable Housing Funding is at Risk

NLIHC Call to Action

Affordable housing funding at risk: Raise your voice this Thursday and tell Congress to pass a clean budget as soon as possible!

Join us for a Twitter storm this Thursday, November 17 from 2 pm to 3pm EST to tell Congress to say no to another short-term stopgap funding bill.

In the wake of the November elections, conservative lawmakers are again pushing for a short-term stopgap spending measure, known as a Continuing Resolution (CR), to delay funding decisions until President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office on January 20. Congress is now waiting for Mr. Trump to signal what path he would prefer to take: passing a CR or full-year spending bills.

If Congress does not approve full-year FY 2017 spending bills for the Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Agriculture (USDA) as soon as possible and instead passes a CR through the spring or later, these agencies may see a steep shortfall in funding. The next Congress could revise FY17 spending bills to add deep funding cuts. This will result in deep cuts to critical housing programs that could cause thousands of families and children to lose access to stable housing, putting them at increased risk of homelessness.

NLIHC has joined the Clean Budget Coalition—a group of more than 200 organizations—to urge Congress and the White House to pass full-year FY‘17 spending bills, free from harmful policy riders, before the end of the year.  A CR puts vital investments in affordable housing at risk.
