The Illinois General Assembly passed a law in 2017 (SB885) that protects would-be homeowners from predatory rent-to-own contracts, effective January 1, 2018. After a resurgence of predatory marketing of rent-to-own contracts from largely unregulated companies that falsely promised homeownership to people with low incomes, NLIHC state partner Housing Action Illinois drafted and advocated for legislation that created some of the strongest consumer safeguards in the nation for potential low-income homeowners. Housing Action Illinois will host a webinar on April 16, 3:00-4:30 p.m. ET to share steps you can take to determine if predatory rent-to-own contracts are an issue in your community and to share tools to develop and implement advocacy campaigns.
