Members of the House of Representatives launched the Yes In My Backyard (YIMBY) Caucus to promote policies that support the development of housing. YIMBY is a broad movement that aims to remove barriers to increasing the supply of new housing supply, barriers such as local regulations that make it difficult to build new homes. Currently several bills in Congress promote YIMBY principles, including the “Yes in My Backyard (YIMBY) Act” (H.R. 3507) which NLIHC has endorsed.
The bipartisan caucus has broad support from advocates and the housing industry. NLIHC staff attended the media release for the launch and supports the YIMBY Caucus in their efforts to address the critical shortage of affordable housing in the U.S.
“America’s affordable and homelessness crisis demands urgent action by all levels of government to address its two main causes, the severe shortage of homes affordable to people with the lowest incomes and the wide gap between incomes and housing costs,” said Diane Yentel, President and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition. “I applaud Representatives Robert Garcia (D-CA), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), Scott Peters (D-CA), Chuck Edwards (R-NC), Jake Auchincloss (D-MA), Marc Molinaro (R-NY), and Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) for creating the bipartisan YIMBY caucus to help advance housing solutions at the scale needed to help end this crisis once and for all.” Read the Caucus media release here.
