Now Available: Our Homes, Our Votes Turning Renters into Voters: Lessons in Engaging Low-Income Communities
Oct 09, 2025
In 2024, Our Homes, Our Votes launched the Pilot Communities initiative to strengthen engagement with low-income renters throughout the electoral process, foster partnerships with subsidized housing providers, and assess the impact of nonpartisan voter engagement.
Five NLIHC State and Tribal Partners with proven experience in nonpartisan voter engagement were selected: the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, the Housing Network of Rhode Island, the Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing, Georgia Advancing Communities Together, and the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania. Each received grant funding, technical assistance, and resources to support nonpartisan voter registration, education, and mobilization. In 2025, Prosperity Indiana joined the initiative.
Turning Renters into Voters: Lessons in Engaging Low-Income Communities is a best practice report that summarizes each pilot partner’s work and offers actionable insights for housing and homelessness organizations to increase voter turnout.
Our Homes, Our Votes Mini-Grant Program
Alongside launching a best practices report, OHOV has established its first-ever mini-grant program to increase our field’s capacity to engage voters. The mini-grant program will fund nonpartisan activities that empower low-income renters and/or people experiencing homelessness to participate in the democratic process.
