This month’s Tenant Talk Live featured alumni from the inaugural cohort of NLIHC’s Generation Housing Justice program. In the presentation, titled Highlighting Generation Housing Justice Fellows, fellows Amea Smith and Phoenix Berry reflected on the lessons learned throughout the program, showcase their final projects, and share their long-term goals toward building a more equitable housing future.
Generation Housing Justice, launched in Fall 2024, is a new NLIHC initiative that empowers young advocates to engage in the housing justice movement by providing hands-on training in federal housing policy, tenant organizing, and community-based advocacy. Throughout their presentations, Smith and Berry highlighted the importance of centering tenant voices, building grassroots power, and staying grounded in the communities most affected by housing instability. The conversation also explored key topics such as eviction sealing laws, how eviction affects youth and their long-term stability, the influence of local government budgets on housing access, and strategies for campaigning to build collective tenant power.
